Ernst Johann Friedrich von Christensen (born March 23, 1801 in Glückstadt , † November 20, 1872 in Itzehoe ) was a German dike inspector and chief construction director .

Live and act

Ernst Johann Friedrich von Christensen was a son of the doctorate chief dike inspector and major general Nikolaus Heinrich von Christensen (1768–1841), who in 1800 had married Louise Sophie Christensen, née Rötger (1773–1852). He had a brother named Karl Adolf Heinrich (1803–1855).

Von Christensen attended the school of scholars in his hometown and in 1819 joined the Royal Danish Engineer Corps. In 1822 he was appointed dike conductor and in 1826 dike inspector of the Holstein district in Heide. He extensively documented the consequences of the February flood he had personally experienced in 1825 and then devoted himself to the reconstruction of the dykes in front of Dithmarschen and the Elbmarschen with thorough expertise and helped to correct their nominal dimensions. He wrote reports for other areas and helped to better drain the grounds of his service district. He also emerged as a cartographer.

From 1849 to 1850 von Christensen and his brother Karl Adolf Heinrich measured the height differences of the routes proposed for the Kiel Canal . In doing so, they selected a design that they had submitted as early as 1848, which was finally carried out. They rejected an alternative route from Brunsbüttelkoog to Eckernförde . Von Christensen's service as dike inspector ended in 1852 when Danish rule was restored for political reasons because of his support for the Schleswig-Holstein uprising . He left Schleswig-Holstein and then worked as senior construction director for Christian August von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg in his exile in Silesia . It is known that he worked on the drainage of the Primkenauer Bruch.

After the end of Danish rule in Schleswig-Holstein in the German-Danish War , von Christensen moved to Itzehoe in 1865 and worked here on a hydrographic map describing the duchies.
