Ernst Karl Heinrich Hoyos-Sprinzenstein

Ernst Karl Heinrich Sosthenes Josef Hoyos-Sprinzenstein (born November 28, 1856 in Vienna , † June 10, 1940 in Gutenstein ; Count of Hoyos-Sprinzenstein until 1919 ) was an Austrian landowner , expedition traveler and kuk officer of noble origin.

To distinguish him from his father, he was also called Ernst Karl the Younger .

Life

Ernst Karl Hoyos-Sprinzenstein grew up in Vienna , Horn and Gutenstein . In 1883 he married Maria Leontine Larisch von Moennich (1862–1886), who died three years after the wedding. In 1896 he took over the administration of the Lower Austrian family estates (the Familienfideikommiss ) in Gutenstein , Drosendorf , Horn, Raan and Rosenburg .

His main interests, however, were his expedition trips and big game hunting: after the early death of his wife, he traveled and photographed North America , Greenland , Africa , India and Mongolia . After the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 he served as an Austro-Hungarian officer.

family

Ernst Karl Heinrich Hoyos-Sprinzenstein comes from the Spanish noble family Hoyos , who immigrated from Spain to Lower Austria in the 16th century . He was one of the eight children of Ernst Karl von Hoyos-Sprinzenstein (1830-1903; also called Ernst Karl the Elder ) and his wife Eleonore von Hoyos, born couple (1835-1913).

With his wife Maria Leontine he had a son, the landowner and politician Rudolf Hoyos-Sprinzenstein (1884–1972).

Honors

A separate exhibition was dedicated to him in 2012 at Rosenburg Castle , which is still family-owned and has been open to the public since the late 19th century.
