Ernst Ludwig Lichtenhahn
Johann Ernst Ludwig Lichtenhahn (born August 11, 1770 in Welschenreuth ( Bavaria ), † February 10, 1824 in Basel ) was a Swiss politician and Federal Colonel of the General Staff .
Lichtenhahn was the son of pastor Johann Rudolf Lichtenhahn and Eleanora Lichtenhahn-Stückelberger. He came from the Liechtenhan family in Basel , but since his father renamed himself "Lichtenhahn", a second branch of the family with a different form of name was created.
After basic school education, he was to follow in his father's footsteps and began studying theology in 1787 , which he did not complete. From 1789 to 1802 Lichtenhahn did military service for the French army in Brabant and Holland . In 1803 he became an officer in the British service in Ireland . Between 1804 and 1824 he was in the service of the Swiss Army: Lichtenhahn was military inspector, field and garrison commander of the Basel Brigades and was responsible for border security in Thurgau , Prättigau and Engadin . In 1804 he was promoted to Aide Major , in 1813 to Colonel and in 1815 finally to Federal Colonel of the General Staff.
Lichtenhahn was also politically active and represented in the Basel Grand Council . Lichtenhahn died in his hometown of Basel in 1824. He remained single all his life; two great-great-grandchildren of his brother (also great-great-great-nephews) are the actor Fritz Lichtenhahn and the musicologist Ernst Lichtenhahn .
