Ernst Mayr (computer scientist)
Ernst Wilhelm Mayr (born May 18, 1950 in Fürstenfeldbruck ) is a German computer scientist .
Mayr went to school in Alling and Fürstenfeldbruck. After being accepted into the Maximilianeum Foundation , he studied mathematics and computer science at the Technical University of Munich from 1971 to 1975 . During a stay at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , he obtained a Master of Science degree in computer science and electrical engineering in 1977, and in 1980 he received his doctorate from the Technical University of Munich on Petri networks . He also wrote two editions of the pocket book EDV Abbreviations for Siemens .
From 1982 to 1989 Mayr, who had also participated in the Presidential Young Investigator Program since 1984 , taught as an Assistant Professor at Stanford University . In 1988 he accepted a position at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, where he was Professor of Theoretical Computer Science until 1993 . From 1993 until his retirement in 2015 he held the chair for efficient algorithms at the Faculty of Computer Science at the Technical University of Munich, which he also headed as dean from 2000 to 2003 .
Mayr received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 1997 for his achievements in the field of theoretical computer science .
