Ernst Passavant

Friedrich Ernst Passavant (born May 15, 1824 in Frankfurt am Main ; † November 22, 1909 there ) was a German lawyer and politician .

Ernst Passavant came from the Frankfurt line of the Passavant family . He was the son of the merchant and member of the Legislative Assembly of the Free City of Frankfurt Samuel Passavant (1787–1855). After attending grammar school in Frankfurt, he studied law in Jena , Berlin and Heidelberg . During his studies he became a member of the fraternity in the Fürstenkeller in 1843/44 . From Heidelberg University he was awarded a Dr. jur. PhD . From 1847 he was a lawyer in Frankfurt am Main. He did economic studies and travel. He became a privy councilor .

Passavant campaigned politically for freedom of trade and the German national movement. In 1848 he was assistant secretary of the German National Assembly. From 1861 until the end of the Free City of Frankfurt in 1866, he was a member of the legislative body . From 1864 he was the first vice-president there. Until 1866 he represented major German positions, but then came to terms with the new conditions. In 1867 he became a member of the city ​​council of Frankfurt and deputy chairman there. In the empire he became a member of the National Liberal Party . He was an actuary in the Reformed Consistory . From 1868 to 1880 he was a paid city councilor and head of the accounting office.

In the Reichstag election in February 1867 , he ran in the Reichstag constituency of Wiesbaden 6th district (City of Frankfurt), but received only 301 votes or 4.1% and was unable to prevail against the conservative candidate Mayer Carl von Rothschild .

He was a patron of the sciences and the arts.
