Ernst Pfiffner
Ernst Pfiffner (born December 6, 1922 in Mosnang , Canton St. Gallen ; † July 9, 2011 in Basel ) was a Swiss composer , conductor and organist . He lived in Basel since 1948.
Life
After graduating from the Abbey School in Disentis , Pfiffner studied philosophy and theology for several semesters before he turned to studying music ( organ ) in Rome and Basel and graduated with a diploma.
From 1950 to 1987 he was cantor , choirmaster and organist in the Michaelskirche in Basel, from 1959 to 1994 he also worked as a music teacher in Basel and Lucerne . In addition, Pfiffner headed the Academy for School and Church Music in Lucerne from 1967 to 1987 and was editor of the music magazine Katholische Kirchenmusik from 1960 to 1970 .
Works
His opus includes more than 140 compositions for solo to large choir as well as for instruments from solo to large orchestra.
