Ernst Poel

Ernst Poel (born September 22, 1796 in Neumühlen , † July 5, 1867 in Altona ) was a lawyer and editor of the Altonaer Mercur, newspaper and intelligence paper for the duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg .

biography

Poel was the son of Piter Poel , diplomat and later editor of the Altonaischer Mercurius . The family came from the Netherlands, where his grandfather Jacobus Poel was born, who was a merchant in Saint Petersburg and Arkhangelsk . When Ernst Poel was baptized on October 12, 1796, the godparents Karl Friedrich Reinhard , then French consul in Hamburg, later French count, envoy and foreign minister, and Christine Reimarus in Hamburg. Poel attended the school of scholars ( Johanneum ) in Hamburg. In 1814 he became a soldier in the Hanseatic Freikorps . He then studied law from 1816 at the University of Kiel and in the winter semester of 1816/17 at the University of Göttingen . In 1817 he traveled from Göttingen to Jena and joined the student train at the Wartburg for the Wartburg Festival . He continued his studies in Berlin and Kiel, completing the second state examination in law in Glückstadt . Then he was employed as a lower court lawyer in Altona .

He became publisher and - after the death of his father - main editor of the Altonaer Mercur, newspaper and intelligence paper for the duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg . This newspaper appeared from 1839 to 1870.
