Life

Ernst Popp Bernard Bolzano

Popp, sometimes also known as Arnost , studied sculpture at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under the famous sculptor and master of classical sculpture in southern Germany, Ludwig Schwanthaler , whom he also helped with decorating the main facade of the Bavarian National Museum . From 1845 Popp worked in Prague, where he also pursued various teaching activities from 1854. Since July 19, 1864, he has been the official modeling teacher of the subject "modeling in clay" at the Prague Polytechnic. His successor in this subject was the drawing teacher Emil Lauffer.

Popp mainly created small sculptures and decorative works in an academic-classicist manner, but also had a talent for realistic portraits through the interpretation of the character of the person portrayed, showing rich and sensitive forms that are reminiscent of the French late Rococo .

His son Antonin Popp (1850–1915) was also a sculptor and, like his father, taught at the Prague Polytechnic.
