Ernst Rappel (born May 19, 1922 in Traunstein ; † January 18, 2013 in Inzell ) was a German academic painter and sculptor .

Life

His father was a master painter and restorer. His mother ran her own paint business.

Rappel studied at the art academy in Munich from 1940 to 1941 , had to interrupt his studies because he was called up during the Second World War , became a prisoner of war and was only able to continue his studies from 1948 to 1950 at the Blocherer School for Painting, Graphics and Design in Munich.

In 1950 he successfully completed his master's examination there and then studied again until 1954 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he also met his first wife Renate Andreas. With her, Ernst Rappel went into business for himself and in the following years dealt with constantly changing materials such as plaster, sgraffito technique , glass and stone mosaics, ceramic murals, spatula techniques and bronze work. In 1966 he completed his knowledge of ceramic techniques with Alvaro Ciancamerla in Rome .

Ernst Rappel died on January 18, 2013 at home in Buchschlöglhof in Inzell .

Ernst Rappel shaped his hometown Traunstein and his later residence Inzell as well as the entire Chiemgau region with his wall and facade paintings in the more than 40 years of his work . Examples are the Rupertusbrunnen at Traunsteiner Maxplatz and the fountain in front of the Inzell town hall.

Ernst Rappel uses a colorful language rich in images for the numerous facade designs on residential and commercial buildings. His motifs, often saints, coats of arms or history pictures, bear his unique signature in their implementation. The signature RA is usually found at the bottom of the picture.

Another important group of his works is sacred art . It can be found in cemeteries, churches, kindergartens and hospitals. His source of inspiration was always an intensive and critical examination of the Bible and Christian faith. Then came the traces that death left on his soul. Within a few years he lost his first wife, with whom he had created many works of art, and also his second wife to cancer. Nevertheless, many works are pervaded by humorous details that give very personal references to the artist. For example, he immortalized all of his dogs as extras in his works.

A comprehensive review of Ernst Rappel's life's work was published in June 2000; he is also mentioned in numerous art and picture books.
