Ernst Rudolf Hildebrand (born December 17, 1923 in Prague ; † January 13, 2019 in Sankt Veit an der Glan ) was an Austrian architect and art patron.

Life

His father was Rudolf Hildebrand (1886–1947), born in Gottesbichl near Klagenfurt, and worked as an architect in Vienna and Prague. His mother Else, b. Schedlbauer (1892–1973) came from a German family in Prague. Ernst Hildebrand had the daughter Marie Celíne with his first wife Heiderose. In 1974 he married Uta geb. Puxkandl, who brought her son into the relationship. They had two daughters together. In 1983 he was hit by a car at the pedestrian crossing in rainy weather and seriously injured.

Ernst Hildebrand had a special relationship with mountaineering through his father and went on hikes and ski tours in old age . In the 1950s he climbed with two Englishmen from Chamonix-Mont-Blanc from the Aiguille de l´M and the Aiguille de Rochefort .

Career

From 1938 to 1942 he attended the Higher State Trade School, Building Construction Department, in Reichenberg and Vienna. From 1942 to 1945 he did military service. From 1945/46 to 1948/49 he studied architecture at the Graz University of Technology and worked as a research assistant at Friedrich Zotter's chair for architecture and design.

After passing the second state examination in 1949, he joined the Fritz Metzger architectural office in Zurich. From 1950 to 1955 he worked for Hermann Baur , Basel and was involved in the design of churches, the Basel trade school and the expansion of the Basel Citizens Hospital. In September 1956 he received his license as an architect.

Ernst Hildebrand was a judge at competitions for the Pedagogical Academy Graz, the Federal Realgymnasium Stainach, State Hospital Oberwart, Recreation Center Perchtoldsdorf, State Hospital Bruck / Mur and the Ferlach retirement home.

  • 1965–68: Training center for nursing school at the LKH - Hildebrand is solely responsible for planning (with integrated concrete work, break hall, stairs, area in front of Hans Bischoffshausen - has been a listed building since 1993)

Hildebrand Gallery

In 1961 he founded the Hildebrand Gallery in Klagenfurt with his first wife Heiderose Hildebrand . The opening exhibition "10 Years of Bischoffshausen" presented works by the international and national avant-garde . The gallery was closed after Heiderose Hildebrand retired in 1970. From 1974 to 1984 it was continued together with his second wife, Uta Hildebrand, as the “Hildebrand Gallery Working Group” with over 300 other exhibitions and events.

In 2015, the Austrian Belvedere Gallery in Vienna presented the special relationship to the Hildebrand gallery and family as part of the retrospective “More than Zero” on Hans Bischoffshausen.

Awards

  • 2004: Appreciation award from the state of Carinthia for special achievements in architecture and for services to building culture.
