Ernst Schmitt (diplomat)

Ernst Schmitt (born September 14, 1879 in Lauterbach (Hesse) , † 1946 in Bad Tölz ) was a German diplomat and writer.

Life

Ernst Schmitt attended high school in Büdingen. He then studied law at the Universities of Giessen and Berlin. In 1898 he became a member of the Corps Hassia in Giessen. In 1901 he passed the trainee examination. In 1905, after passing his exams, he became a Hessian government councilor. In 1906 he became German Vice Consul in Barcelona. In 1910 he was appointed legation councilor and permanent laborer in the Foreign Office. After leading the German-Swiss economic negotiations during the First World War, he was appointed lecturer at the Foreign Office in 1919. From July to October 1919 he was chairman of the economic commission in Versailles. From 1921 to 1934 Schmitt was German consul general in Milan and at the same time accredited diplomatic representative in San Marino. From 1934 to 1938 he was the German envoy in Lima . Schmitt joined the NSDAP .

In addition to his diplomatic posts, Ernst Schmitt was active as a writer, in particular of some novels.
