Ernst Theumer (born March 29, 1890 in Schmiedeberg , Province of Saxony , † April 10, 1978 in Vienna ) was an Austrian politician .

Life

Ernst Theumer, the son of a factory worker, trained as a tailor and joined the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Germany (SDAP) in 1908 at the age of 18 . In 1911 he became a soldier and drafted shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. In 1916 he was seriously wounded and in this way came to Vienna, where in 1919 he took over the management of an ammunition depot in Stammersdorf .

After the war, Theumer joined the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) and subsequently became a councilor and deputy mayor of the then still autonomous community of Stammersdorf. During the period of Austro-fascism Theumer was briefly in the detention camp in 1934 Wöllersdorf-Steinabrückl interned and operational at the time of National Socialism opposition to the Nazi regime.

In 1946 he was elected to the district board of the 21st Viennese district of Floridsdorf , and only two years later, in 1948, to the district chairman. He held this office for eleven years, until 1959.

He was married to Anna Schröter, who was also from Germany.

Honors

The Ernst-Theumer-Hof community building in Floridsdorf, which was completed in 1985, was named after Theumer, as was the Theumermarkt in the same district in 1994 .
