Ernst Tiburzy

Ernst Tiburzy (born December 26, 1911 in Drosdowen , Johannisburg district , East Prussia ; † November 14, 2004 in Papenburg ) was a German Volkssturm battalion leader who was the first Volkssturm member to receive the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross .

Tiburzy was the commander of the Volkssturm battalion 25/82 in the Königsberg fortress . He received the Knight's Cross for his battle for the fortress when he destroyed between five and nine Russian T-34s in a single battle on February 10, 1945 . Through this initiative he prevented the Soviet troops from breaking through. During his mission he was wounded several times. He was the first of only four members of the Volkssturm to receive the Knight's Cross. The award was confirmed in the Deutsche Wochenschau number 755 from March 1945.

Tiburzy was also mentioned in the Wehrmacht report of February 28, 1945.
