Life

From 1893 to 1895 Toepfer attended the drawing, painting and arts and crafts school , a private art school run by H. Bouffier , where he was praised, among other things, for his achievements (“very good perception and very good ability, coupled with great diligence”). He then studied until mid-1898 at the Grand Ducal Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe , which was led by Count Leopold von Kalckreuth . In 1898, Toepfer moved to the Royal Academic University of Fine Arts in Charlottenburg for ten years , where he graduated in 1908 and opened his own studio.

Toepfer married Maria Theresia Klaus, whom he had met on a trip to Brandenburg , in Berlin in 1909. The couple moved to Idstein in 1910 , to the Idsteiner Höerhof .

After serving as a soldier in World War I , Toepfer returned to Idstein and devoted himself to painting again. The core of his work were images of his homeland. His realistic impressionist pictures were influenced by Lovis Corinth , Wilhelm Leibl , Carl Schuch and Karl Blechen .

He died in Idstein on August 6, 1955.

Post fame

A street in Idstein was named after Ernst Toepfer. Since 2015 there has been a small permanent exhibition with works by the painter in the Idstein City Museum, in the Killingerhaus , where he is reminded of him in alternating hanging under the motto Toepfer - At eye level on two walls .
