history

On May 1, 1872, Ernst Wasmuth ( Regenthin 1845–1897) opened an architecture bookstore in Berlin, which he was soon able to expand to include a specialist publisher. The architecture and art publisher Wasmuth subsequently published a number of standard works, among others by Hermann Muthesius and Frank Lloyd Wright . During this time, two magazines were published by Wasmuth Verlag, Der Städtebau and the magazine Architektur des XX. Century . Ernst's younger brother Emil († 1894) joined the company in 1875.

From 1905 to 1928 the Dehio , the handbook of German art monuments, was published. From 1913 to 1943 Emil Wasmuth's son Günther managed the publishing house in Berlin. Günther Wasmuth founded Wasmuth's monthly magazine for architecture in 1914 . From 1919 to 1926 Günther's brother Ewald Wasmuth worked in the publishing house. He ended the publishing work in favor of his own activities as a philosopher and translator (including Blaise Pascal ). In 1943 the publishing house was completely destroyed.

After 1945 Günther Wasmuth († 1974) re-founded the publishing house in Tübingen, while the Wasmuth bookstore and antiquarian bookshop were reopened in Berlin. As a result, the publisher concentrated again on the areas of architecture, art and archeology, with the addition of scientific works and illustrated books. From 1990 until the bankruptcy in 2018, Ernst J. Wasmuth acted as managing director of the publishing house, and since 2019 as senior publisher.

A branch line of the publishing house existed from 1942 in Zurich under the company name "Fretz & Wasmuth". The publisher produced u. a. Books that at that time could not find any publishers in the occupation zones or in the FRG because their authors were (still) discredited. This includes B. the autobiography of the German national Hans Bernd Gisevius , a zealous stirrup holder of the Nazi injustice state, who, according to his own statements, later became a member of the resistance. Neither of these promised any publishing success in West Germany after 1945; Only revised new editions from 1961 created a larger readership here too.
