Ernst Weitkamp

Ernst Weitkamp (born May 1, 1908 in Quernheim , Herford district, † September 24, 1977 in Lübbecke ) was a German dentist who worked during the Nazi era a. a. was used as a camp dentist in Mauthausen concentration camp .

Life

Weitkamp completed his studies in dentistry in 1932 in Frankfurt am Main with a doctorate and license to practice medicine . In October he settled as a dentist in Lübbecke / Westphalia, in 1933 he joined the National Socialist Aviation Corps (NSFK) "as a prerequisite for admission to the health insurance fund" (Weitkamp ), in March 1934 membership in the SS , from May 1937 in the NSDAP . In November 1939 Weitkamp was called up for a medical guide trainee course and worked from April to August 1940 as head of the dental station in Mauthausen concentration camp . According to his own statements, he treated members of the Waffen SS and prisoners in his practice outside the actual camp . Then Weitkamp moved to the "Barmherzigen Brüder" reserve hospital in Linz. For health reasons Weitkamp returned to his practice in Lübbecke in November 1940. From March 1941 until the end of the war, he worked as a dentist in SS units with the rank of SS-Obersturmführer .

In the denazification process of the British military government , Weitkamp submitted statements by contemporary witnesses that attested his rejection of National Socialism , his early internal departure from the SS, his affiliation with the Confessing Church and personal help for Nazi opponents. In 1945 a former concentration camp inmate reported after his release from nine years of imprisonment that in 1936 he and his fiancée had been housed by Weitkamp for two weeks on the run from the Gestapo .

According to the recommendation of the denazification expert (“adverse actions or denunciation of Nazi opponents not known”), Weitkamp was finally classified in category IV (“fellow travelers”, no occupational restrictions, asset or account freezes) by decision of April 5, 1948. Until his death in 1977 he practiced as a resident dentist in Lübbecke. His son Jürgen Weitkamp took over his practice and later became President of the German Dental Association .
