Ernst Zimmermann (geologist, 1860)

Ernst Zimmermann (born July 15, 1860 in Gera ; † January 6, 1944 there ) was a German geologist who dealt in particular with the geology of Thuringia .

Life

Zimmermann went to high school in Gera and was consulted by his teacher Karl Theodor Liebe as a pupil and then as a student for geological mapping work in Thuringia, which Liebe carried out on behalf of the Prussian Geological Institute (PGLA). He studied geology in Jena with Ernst Erhard Schmid (and two semesters in Munich with Karl Alfred von Zittel ), who also used him for mapping in Thuringia. In 1883 he received his doctorate there on German and Alpine rhaetium . In Jena he also studied zoology with Ernst Haeckel . In 1885/86 he carried out the duties of curator in the paleontological-geological collection of the Jena University under Gustav Steinmann . From 1886 he himself was with the PGLA, for which he mapped extensively in Thuringia. In 1887 Ernst Zimmermann was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1925 he retired. He had the rank of a secret mountain ridge.

In August 1912 he was one of the 34 founding members of the Paleontological Society . In 1938 he received the first Gustav Steinmann Medal . He was an honorary member of the German Geological Society. In 1927 he became an honorary member of the Thuringian Geological Association .
