Ernst von Montfort
Ernst von Montfort (* 1700 in Salzburg ; † 1758 in Tettnang ), also Maximilian Joseph Ernst von Montfort-Tettnang , was the ruling Count of Tettnang and Langenargen from 1733 to 1755 .
Live and act
Ernst von Montfort was the son and successor of Anton III. who left the government to his son before his death in 1727 due to over-indebtedness and poor creditworthiness. When he took office, he was able to obtain a haircut from the debtors. He also succeeded in obtaining a loan from the diocese of Speyer on very good terms from his brother-in-law Cardinal von Schönborn , with which the remaining debts could have been paid off. At least this is the assessment of the court chronicler at the time:
"The whole debt system [is] happily lifted, [...] that there is no doubt that the lordly count's house will be paid up from all liabilities with divine help in 20 years and put in a flourishing state again."
Like his father, however, Count Ernst was a great patron of art and music, which was reflected in the court keeping, which was considered appropriate, but which was far beyond the financial possibilities of the over-indebted county. The repayments to Speyer stalled, whereupon the loan was canceled. When the New Castle in Tettnang burned down in 1733 , Count Ernst left the official business and thus the reconstruction work to his son Count Franz Xaver .
