Ero aphana is a spider from the family of the pirate spider . It is one of four species of the genus that occur in Central Europe .

Abdomen with the typical humps

Ero aphana is a small species of spider that only reaches a body size of 3 to 4 mm. There are 4 conspicuous humps on the spherical abdomen ( opisthosoma ). The basic color of the abdomen is light gray to light beige. There are irregular, darker spots on it. The front part of the body ( prosoma ) is very light with a fuzzy black border, a spot in the middle and further markings in the eye area. The legs are ringed light-dark.

Distribution, habitat and way of life

Ero aphana occurs throughout the Palearctic , especially in warm areas. It lives mainly in coniferous forests and also on bushes at their edge.

Like all species of spider- eater, Ero aphana feeds exclusively on other spiders. Adult animals are found in summer.
