The spider-eaters (Mimetidae) are a family of real spiders that feed exclusively on other spiders and comprise eleven genera with 148 species. (As of December 2016)
distribution
The family has its main distribution center in the tropics . Only the genus Ero is widespread in the Palearctic . Four types of Ero , most commonly Ero furcata , can also be found in Central Europe .
features
The spider-eaters resemble small representatives of the crested-web spiders (Theridiidae), but have a characteristic thorn on the front legs. On the tibia and metatarsus there are long, curved spines at regular intervals, between which there are a few shorter, identically shaped spines.
One hunting tactic used by spider-eaters is to tug at other spiders' webs with their legs. In doing so, they imitate prey caught in the web and lure the spider, who owns the web, out to eat it.
Systematics
The World Spider Catalog lists eleven genera and 148 species for spider-eaters. (As of December 2016)
