Erosaria is a screw - genus from the family of cowries (Cypraeidae).

features

The housings are small to medium-sized (approx. 2 to 5 cm). They are oval with a flat bottom. The margins are thickened secondarily. The mouth teeth are strongly developed, the fossula is small to moderately sunk. The top of the housing typically shows a pattern of spots.

Occurrence, distribution and way of life

The species of this genus occur cosmopolitan in the tropical to warm temperate zones. You live in shallow, but z. Sometimes also slightly deeper water from coral reefs and rocky coasts. Some species also live on sandy or muddy bottoms.

Systematics

The genus Erosaria was established by Franz Hermann Troschel in 1863; The type species is Cypraea erosa Linné, 1758. The genus is regarded by some authors only as a subgenus of Cypraea (e.g. Wilson, 1993).

Here the systematic allocation of the species is shown, as described by Felix Lorenz . Other systematists see it differently in individual cases. For example, the species M. caputserpentis is listed in this genus in some taxonomic systems, elsewhere M. caputserpentis is a species of the genus Monetaria .
