An eruption cross (short: E-cross ; English Christmas Tree ) serves as the end of a successful drilling for crude oil or natural gas . It consists of a flanged pipeline as well as several fittings , pressure gauges and fittings that are permanently connected to the casing of the borehole. With the help of this arrangement, it is possible to take the oil and gas from the borehole in a controlled manner and feed it into a pipeline .

The eruption cross is also used in drilling to pump water and other liquids or gases into the borehole, for example to increase the pressure in the associated oil field or to bring natural gas into an underground storage facility that has been developed through boreholes .
