Erwin Bernhard
Erwin Rudolfowitsch Bernhard ( Russian Эрвин Рудольфович Бернгард ; born January 15 . Jul / 27. January 1852 greg. In St. Petersburg , † April 25 jul. / 8. May 1914 greg. In Reval ) was a Baltic German architect .
Life
Bernhard, son of the architect Rudolf von Bernhard , attended the private Wiedemann grammar school in St. Petersburg and then studied at the St. Petersburg University of Applied Sciences from 1868–1874, graduating as an architect's assistant. After graduating, he was sent to Estonia as a junior civil engineer to work in the administration of the Estonia Governorate .
From 1874 to 1882 Bernhard built churches in various villages and on the island of Worms . He was also involved in the restoration of the Reval city fortifications . In 1877 he was promoted to architect-engineer with his project for the construction of a gas tank . In 1878 he became a member of the St. Petersburg Architects' Association. In 1884 he became the architect of the city theater, the municipal credit company and the insurance company in Reval. 1887–1889 he built the Orthodox Nativity of the Mother of God Church (Jumalaema Sündimise kirik) with K. Nyman in Klein-Lechtigall . The Orthodox Church in Marienland followed in 1888–1889 . For Elisabeth von Schilling he built the Kolu manor house ( Järva district ) from 1888–1890 . The Lambertus Church in Haggers was built between 1891 and 1892 and was consecrated by the Estonian general superindentent Magnus Heinrich Ferdinand Hörschelmann . In 1893–1895, Bernhard rebuilt St. Michael's Church in Jörden in a neo-Gothic style . 1897–1898 he created the top of the Reval Nikolaikirche . In 1906 Bernhard was appointed to the State Council (5th class ). In 1908 he retired.
Bernhard's brothers Wilhelm and Richard (1864–1929) were also architects.
