Erwin Moritz Herbert Guttmann

Erwin Moritz Herbert Guttmann (* 15. August 1909 , † 25. December 1980 in Bamberg ) was a German composer in chess .

Guttmann composed 621 chess problems. He preferred minimal problems, those are positions in which White has only one piece besides his king. In 1962 he published the book Minimalprobleme in Walter Rau Verlag . Here you will find 215 chess problems, many of them by Guttmann himself. He also wrote several articles for Die Schwalbe , for example in January 1960 and June 1963 with the title Subject with Variations .

Solution:

1. Qc8! threatens
Qf5 mate 1.… Bc2 if 1.…
Bg4 2. Qe8 mate 2. Qd7 Bd3 the bishop must defend f5. About Bb1 follows Qd1 mate
3. De6 Be4 again f5 must remain covered and Qe2 prevented
4. Qh3 - Black is now under pressure , he has to protect f3 and f5
4.… Bd3 if 4.… Bd5 4. Qf5 mate
5. Qf3 mate


Immediately 1. Qh3 fails because of Bg4.

Guttmann came from Grünberg (Silesia) and lived in Berlin before the war. Later lived in Munich for many years . In 1980 he moved to Bamberg .
