Erwin Strassmann

Erwin Otto Strassmann (* 1895 in Berlin , † 1972 in Houston ) was a German -American gynecologist and professor of gynecology .

Life

Strassmann was a German lieutenant captain in the First World War . In 1922 he received his doctorate in medicine . From 1924 to 1936 he worked, among other things, as a lecturer at the University Women's Clinic in Berlin . In 1936 he was released and , with the help of the brothers William James Mayo and Charles Horace Mayo, emigrated to the United States , where they invited him to the Mayo Clinic . From 1942 Strassmann was an American citizen. Strassmann "made significant contributions to the establishment of modern gynecology in the USA"; In 1965 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class , by the then Federal President Heinrich Lübke .
