Volkmar, who was a plumber by profession , joined the Heros boxing club in Berlin-Tempelhof in December 1923. As an amateur, he played 240 fights. In doing so, he acquired the reputation of being one of the best technicians in Germany.

During his amateur days, Volkmar became Berlin amateur champion five times: 1925 in the bantam, 1926 in the featherweight, in 1927 in the light weight and in 1929 and 1930 in the welterweight. He achieved his greatest success in 1926 when he became German champion of the featherweight class. In addition, Volkmar reached the final fights at the German amateur boxing championships in 1927 and 1929.

In 1931 Volkmar switched to the professional camp. As such, he fought some good fights, but did not quite meet the expectations that had been set in him due to the technical and tactical skills he had acquired as an amateur: Between 1922 and 1933 he played twenty professional fights, of which he won three and lost eight. while nine ended in a draw. He fought his last fight on February 17, 1933 against Gustav Eder . Other well-known boxers he boxed against were Hein Domgörgen, Darwin Meergrün and Kurt Kreuger .

Volkmar recently fought in the middleweight division. At the time of his death he was still committed to the 1933 middleweight tournament in the Berlin boxing arena "Spichernring".

death

On the night of April 20-21, 1933 (around 0.30 a.m.), Volkmar, who was a communist, got into a fight with relatives of the Berlin-Neukölln at Cafe Casaleon on Hohenzollernplatz (today Karl-Marx-Platz) in Berlin-Neukölln SA Storm 51 (Neukölln), who returned from security tasks in the Kliems festival halls. When the brawl continued on the street in front of the café, some SA members fired shots, allegedly after a first shot from an unknown source, injuring Volkmar. He was brought to the Britz hospital in critical condition , where he died on April 21 in the course of the morning.

It was never possible to determine who had fired the fatal shot at Volkmar. In newspaper reports from April 21st it was said that the SA leader "Willi S." ( Willi Schmidt ) had shot Volkmar in self-defense. In the 1960s, however, Schmidt testified that not only he, but also some other SA men had fired shots, so that it was unclear who fired the bullet that hit Volkmar. A case initiated in 1933 against SA members Knop, Judek and Schmidt was discontinued, as was a case against Schmidt carried out by the Berlin public prosecutor in 1967.

Commemoration

On November 16, 2015 , a stumbling block for Volkmar was laid in Berlin-Neukölln , Karl-Marx-Strasse at the corner of Jonasstrasse .
