The Eryk Lipiński Caricature Museum (in Polish: Muzeum Karykatury im. Eryka Lipińskiego ) exhibits graphics, paintings and photographs by Polish and foreign authors. The focus is on satire. The museum is located at 11 Kozia Street in Warsaw , near the Old Town and Krakowskie Przedmieście Street.

Development until 1983

The museum was founded on September 15, 1978 as a branch of the Adam Mickiewicz Literature Museum . The founding father and first director of the museum was Eryk Lipiński , a well-known journalist, graphic artist and scenographer in Poland.

Initially, only exhibits from Eryk Lipiński's private collection were exhibited. Gifts and presents from numerous other authors and owners were added later.

The formal creation of the museum guaranteed neither its own exhibition space nor an office or a collection point for the works. Therefore the exhibitions took place either in the Adam Mickiewicz Literature Museum or other private rooms and halls. During these 5 years Eryk Lipiński displayed a high level of self-sacrifice. In the years before the official opening, he collected everything he could find with the idea of opening such a museum. Membership of the Polish United Workers' Party certainly helped him with the organization and implementation .

Development after 1983

In 1983 the entire museum moved to Kozia-Strasse in a building that originally served as the orangery of the Primate's Palace . However, it was not really ready to move in and still required a lot of renovation work. The museum staff helped with this. The first exhibition in the new headquarters took place on October 27, 1983 under the title “The best works in the collections of the Caricature Museum” ( Najlepsze prace w zbiorach Muzeum Karykatury ). At the same time, the museum was removed from the organizational structures of the literary museum and immediately started functioning as an independent public institution financed by the state.

In the early days of the museum as an independent institution, the entire collection consisted of around 2500 works. Today the museum has over 25,000 exhibits. The oldest work dates from the 18th century.

Among the authors there are such names as Maja Berezowska , Julian Bohdanowicz , Antoni Chodorowski , Daniel Chodowiecki , Andrzej Czeczot , Honoré Daumier , Jerzy Flisak , Kazimierz Grus , Ha-Ga , William Hofarth , Zbigniew Jujka , Szymon Kobyliński , Franciszek Kostrzewski , Zbigniew Lengren , Eryk Lipiński, Edward Lutczyn , Andrzej Mleczko , Jan Piotr Norblin , Andrzej Podulka , Juliusz Puchalski , Szczepan Sadurski , Henryk Sawka , Jerzy Zaruba , Zbigniew Ziomecki and Zygmunt Zaradkiewicz .

The former orangery is not that big. There are only two exhibition rooms there. Therefore, the exhibitions are changed at regular intervals.
