Jan Piotr Norblin (born July 15, 1745 in Misy-sur-Yonne  , † February 23, 1830 in Paris ), originally Jean Pierre Norblin de La Gourdaine , was a Polish draftsman, painter and printmaker of French origin. His extensive work includes ancient and landscape themes, motifs based on Rembrandt and several thousand realistic scenes. The latter made him a documentary of contemporary Polish history. He was also involved in the design of the Polish landscape gardens in Powązki and Arkadia .

Origin and education

He was the son of Pierre-Martin Norblin and Elizabeth Colett. The father was the owner of an agricultural estate, "La Gourdaine", whose name Norblin would later add to his in order not to be confused with namesakes. The budding artist lived in Paris from around 1760.

First he learned and worked in the studios of Jacques-Philippe Caresme (1734–1796) and the battle painter Francesco Casanova . The latter was his teacher at the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture , which Norblin attended from around 1765. From 1769 to 1770 he studied at the École Royale des Élèves Protégés , where he was a student of Louis-Michel van Loo and Joseph-Marie Vien .

Life as an artist

From 1771 Norblin worked as a freelance artist in Paris and his hometown. The first contact with the Polish nobleman Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski was probably made in 1774 . Norblin moved to Warsaw, the city that was to become the center of his life, and in the following years was significantly involved in the planning of Princess Izabela Czartoryska's gardens in Powązki . In 1779 he traveled to Saxony and to France four times at the end of the 18th century.

Due to a special permit, he was able to move freely in Warsaw during the Kościuszko uprising and witnessed fights and executions, which he documented in drawings. After the failure of the uprising, he withdrew from Warsaw and lived in the country. From 1802 to 1804 he worked for the Czartoryski family.

Norblin married twice: in 1776 Marianna Tokarska (died 1787) and in 1794 Maria Magdalena Anna Kopsch (1770–1861). Three of his children became artists: Aleksander Jan Konstanty (1777–1828), later a metal caster in Poland, Sébastien Louis (1796–1884), later a painter in France and Louis Pierre Martin (1781–1884), later a painter and musician in France. Other children were: Marianna Elżbieta Ewa (1778–1855), the twins Józef Szacfajer and Konstancja Anna (born 1780), Franciszka Ludwika (1787–1787) and Tadeusz (died 1795).
