Archangel Michael's Church in Andělská Hora

The parish church of St. Michael the Archangel. (Czech: Kostel svatého Michaela archanděla ) in the Czech village Andělská Hora (German Engelhaus ) is a protected monument.

history

The origins of the parish are obscure. In 1384, the later parish villages Espenthor and Sollmus appear in the church building registers as their own parish, but not Engelhaus, which did not exist at that time. According to sources, Engelhaus was originally parish to the parish church of St. Anna in Zettlitz. Much older than the parish church is the chapel of St. Jungfrau, later Trinity Chapel , which developed into a pilgrimage site at the end of the Middle Ages and was first mentioned in writing in 1393.

The then owner of the lordship, Heinrich III. von Plauen , in 1487 commissioned the master builder Erhart Bauer from Eichstätt, Bavaria , who was in the service of the city of Eger , to build a parish church below Engelhaus Castle. The church dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel was completed in 1490. In addition to Engelhaus, Espenthor, Stichelmühle and at times Sollmus, Gießhübel, Neudörfl and Schönau, the parish was an independent parish . With the introduction of the Reformation it became Protestant.

At the beginning of the 17th century, the barons Colonna von Fels had the right of patronage . The church records begin in 1631. After the end of the Thirty Years' War, the new owner was the rule, Count Hermann Czernin of Chudenice , the pastor again with a Catholic priest occupy. A fire in late summer 1641 destroyed the building. Reconstruction began shortly afterwards. In another devastating fire in 1718, which almost completely destroyed Engelhaus, the church was rebuilt using the old baroque masonry. In 1719 a new rectory was built. In 1720 the church received a baroque interior.

The churchyard was abandoned in the first half of the 19th century and moved to the Trinity Chapel, southwest of Engelhaus. The last major fire on August 17, 1885 again badly damaged the church. The church was given its current classical appearance by the Prague architect Anton Viktor Barvitius . In 1930 the parish had 2,882 Catholics. The last German pastor was Johannes Breit from Altenteich. In 2000 and 2011, the church in need of renovation was renovated with the help of the German-Czech Future Fund.

The main entrance on the west facade is via a massive prismatic tower with a square clock, the side entrance is on the south side of the church.

Furnishing

inner space

The interior is kept in a uniform neo-renaissance style. The artistic design was done by the carpenter Lorenz and the Prague sculptor Bernhard Otto Seeling . The main altar was made by the Tyrolean sculptor Ferdinand Stuflesser from Ortisei in Val Gardena. A valuable older altar donated by the church patron Count Czernin was previously rejected because of its size and was lost. There is a statue of St. Michael the Archangel above the altar. On the walls of the nave there are pictures of a station of the cross. The organ was supplied by the organist Ferdinand Langenauer in 1887. The ceiling and walls of the presbytery were designed in 1902 by the artist Karl Zimmermann.
