Red Cardell (2019)

Red Cardell is a French rock band that has been popular not only in Brittany , their region of origin, since the 1990s. Her artistic work, her repertoire and her numerous collaborations with colleagues of all possible musical genres, both in live performances and in recording sessions in the recording studio, go far beyond the narrow window of pure rock music.

history

The group, some of the earliest members of which had played together since the late 1980s, first under the name Karroth Rapées and later as Penfleps , was formed in Quimper in 1992 . In retrospect, the band describes their style at the time as a "punk-ethno-rock fusion". According to her own statements, she has given around 2000 concerts since then and has appeared at all the major festivals not only in Brittany; at the Festival de Cornouaille in their hometown they are, so to speak, regulars. In Germany they could be heard at the Folklore Festival in Krefeld .

Red Cardell, who recently also wrote themselves Red Car Dell, have so far released 20 long-playing records (see below) . Among them, three albums were created in the 2010s , on which they play music together with Bagad Kemper - Kemper is the Breton name of Quimper - and thus make a significant contribution to linking the traditional music of the marching band (" Bagadoù ") with rock . They have also participated as guests on recordings by Louise Ebrel (1932–2020), a singer of historical songs in the region such as Kan ha Diskan and Gwerzioù .

Red Cardell could not record success in the French charts . However , along with Denez Prigent , Gilles Servat , Soldat Louis and especially Les Ramoneurs de menhirs , their records at the Coop Breizh distribution company , an independent company consciously committed to Breton culture, are among those that sell in particularly large numbers.

Staffing

Red Cardell has experienced numerous changes of band members in the decades of its existence. Their current line-up , in which they also performed together with the Bagad Kemper at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient 2019, on the occasion of its 70th anniversary, consists of:

  • Jean-Pierre Riou: guitar, mandolin, vocals, bass, harmonica
  • Pierre Sangra: guitar, mandolin, violin, banjo, saz , cello, standing bass
  • Fred Lucas: Bass
  • Hibu Corbel: drums, percussions, bass, piano

Accordionist Jean-Michel Moal, next to Jean-Pierre Riou one of the longest standing members of the group, has not been with the group since 2018; from 2011 to 2015 he had to take sick leave.
