history

The folklore festival, first held on August 19, 1978, offers an international music and dance program with artists from all over the world. It is Germany's oldest and largest free and outdoor festival for folk and world music . Every year around 10,000 people visit the festival at Platz an der Alte Kirche. In addition to the main stage, there is a market on the side square with an international culinary offer as well as a side stage for street musicians. A children's program is also offered. Since 2018, acts from the surrounding region have also been able to present themselves on the "Rhein-Ruhr-Stage", which is also suitable for young artists. The festival usually takes place on the last NRW summer vacation weekend. The Folklore Festival has been organized by the Initiative Folklorefest Krefeld e. V.

In 2017, the folklore festival celebrated its fortieth edition.

Since 2002, in cooperation with the Krefeld Zoo , the heraldic animal of the folklore festival chosen by the members of the association has changed annually to decorate the festival's posters and merchandise.
