Free and outdoors has been an established term for music festivals with free admission under the open sky since the 1970s .

Concept and execution

In view of the increasing commercialization of rock music and also as a result of the 1968 movement , culture in general and rock music in particular should be freely accessible, self-designed and free from commercial interests. The name was created in 1970 by Günter Scheding from Herford for a day event organized by Norbert Hähnel in Bünde . The title was picked up again in 1975 in Vlotho , a year later in Stemwede at the Stemweder Open Air . Other traditional events are the Wutzrock Festival , which has been taking place in Hamburg since 1978, as well as the Krefeld Folklore Festival , the Umsonst & Draußen Stuttgart, which has existed since 1980, and the Abifestival in Lingen since 1981 .

In Germany, events under this title take place every year in numerous cities, but they are independent of one another. Some of them are still self-sustaining, some are financed by sponsors, others are organized by radio stations or restaurants and have only the name in common with the original concept.

One of the largest festivals of this kind is the Woodstock stop in Küstrin (Kostrzyn nad Odrą, Poland ) with over 700,000 visitors in 2011. Up until 2011, the Rhine culture in Bonn was one of the larger festivals in Germany with up to 170,000 visitors, and that also counted until 2009 Das Fest, which has been taking place in Karlsruhe since 1985, with up to 200,000 visitors (from 2010 no longer free). There are also dozens of smaller festivals, some with only regionally known bands.
