Gjallarhorn is a Finnish musical group whose members belong to the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland. The band name comes from Nordic mythology and describes a horn that belongs to Heimdall , the god of light .

style

Gjallarhorn mainly uses old Nordic ballads , minuets and prayer chants in runic verses , which are not unlike the Icelandic Rimur epics. These pieces are rearranged and combined with elements from jazz , rock and world music . In addition to the classical instruments of Nordic music (such as violins and violas), the musicians also use African-Cuban drums and the Australian didgeridoo. Through this instrumentation the band tries to bring lost elements of Finnish-Swedish folk music back to life.

Since its inception, the band has received the following awards: "LaMonde de la Musique CHOC" and the "Trad Magazine Bravos !!!".

history

Gjallarhorn was founded in 1994 in the Swedish-speaking part of Finland by Jenny Wilhelms, Christopher Öhman and Jacob Frankenhaeuser.

Two years later, David Lillkvist (percussion) joined the band. Even before the release of their first CD Ranarop (1997) Frankenhaeuser left the band and was replaced by Tommy Mansikka-Aho. With this line-up, they released their second album Sjofn in 2000 .

In the same year Christopher Öhman left the band and was replaced by Adrian Jones. In 2002 there was another change and Sara Puljula took the place of David Lillkvist. With this new line-up, they released their third long player Grimborg .

The collaboration with Sara Puljula lasted only a year. In 2004 there was another band reshuffle: Petter Berndalen became the new percussionist and Tommy Mansikka-Aho left the band. The band has not changed since Göran Månsson joined in 2005. In 2006 her last album, Rimfaxe, was released .
