Shortbus is a 2006 film directed by John Cameron Mitchell .

action

In the episodic dramedy , Jamie and James meet in New York , a gay couple whose relationship is in crisis (James prepares his suicide without Jamie realizing it ); Sofia, a couples therapist who, despite having acrobatic sex with her husband Rob, has never had an orgasm ; and the young dominatrix Severin, who suffers from her inability to develop a deeper personal relationship. They all come closer to each other by chance: first the two gays and the therapist in a grotesquely ending therapy session, finally all in a club called Shortbus in Brooklyn . This meeting place, a combination of vaudeville and swingers club for cheerful group sex , claims to reflect the unbroken liberal, even libertarian-anarchist zeitgeist in New York after the attacks of September 11, 2001. Right at the beginning of the film, the camera flies, starting from the feet of the Statue of Liberty , over a stylized animated panorama of the city, into the apartments of the sexually active protagonists.

Reviews

Shortbus received very positive reviews from the features section of the national German newspapers.

“The special thing about John Cameron Mitchell's Shortbus is the humane happiness with which taboos are celebrated. Sex is not the problem, but the solution - more precisely: good sex is the solution. That doesn't mean that the view of the private is narrowed. "

- taz

“It is true that director Mitchel shows real sex in his film. But that's far from being dirty cinema, it's something completely new in mainstream cinema. Because the film is both explicit and optimistic. "

“Under the shrill surface in the heart, Shortbus is a very clever, sad, always romantic love film. Worth seeing - but not for everyone. "

“Nevertheless there is a pornographic moment, a number of the highest acrobatics, whose appeal is difficult to resist. A young man actually blows himself and this is not a trick or computer animation. Not everyone will be able to imitate it, but it's comforting to know that something like this is basically possible. Corresponding requests made in anger, such as those easily passed on the lips of motorists, now shine in a different light. […] Like only Pedro Almodóvar , John Cameron Mitchell achieves an atmosphere in which even the most unusual sexual orientation appears completely normal within seconds and even the most bourgeois viewer would no longer rule out being friends with transsexuals for years. The sex is suddenly nothing unusual anymore, although we have never seen so much of it at once in a feature film. "

"Thanks to a sensitive figure design, developed with amateur actors, the visually drastic film, which operates with explicit sex scenes, shows in a believable way sexual blockages as a symptom of general psychological confusion and thus provides insights into a city that is still open, but also wounded."

effect

Sook-Yin Lee , who previously worked full-time as a radio presenter in Canada , almost wasn't hired by her employer, the public Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), for her debut in the feature film, due to the many revealing sex scenes . It wasn't until the protests of prominent artists such as Francis Ford Coppola , Michael Stipe , Julianne Moore and Yoko Ono that she was allowed to continue her work at the CBC.

synchronization

The dubbing of the film was created at Elektrofilm based on a dialog book and directed by Stephan Hoffmann.
