A scraper is a conveyor in mining . It is used underground as well as in open-cast mining , especially in sand and gravel extraction.

Structure and mode of operation

The scraper consists of a rotating steel cable with attached tow buckets and two fixed pulleys , one of which is driven. It can be driven by either a diesel or an electric motor. The bucket is pulled empty to the pulley and then the direction of the steel rope is changed. When pulling back, the bucket (or scraper, bucket) fills with material and pushes it to the drive station.

Underground

The scraper was previously widely used in underground mining . After blasting, a hole was drilled in the ridge area of ​​the face and an anchor was placed there, to which the pulley was attached. Then the rope was laid and the blasted material could be pulled away from the face to other conveying media (e.g. Hunt ). The scrapers were also used in the offsetting of excavation cavities and cleaning shaft sumps . Nowadays, the scraper has been more and more replaced by automotive technology (e.g. wheel loaders ).

Open pit

In sand and gravel extraction, scraper systems are used for both dry and wet dredging . In contrast to floating equipment ( e.g. dredger ), scrapers are always on land when dredging. Scrapers are also very suitable for extracting gravel from rivers. Scrapers are good to use where other techniques reach their limits due to solidified material or large stones. A layer of conglomerate can be broken through with a scraper, transported to shore in large pieces and removed via the vibrating grate . Larger stones are not a problem even if they are larger than the scraper bucket. If the stones do not fit into the bucket, the full bucket pushes them in front of it. So that large stones do not clog the feeder and damage the conveyor belt , they are removed via a vibrating grate.
