Eschmeyer nexus is a small marine fish from the order of the perch-like (Perciformes). It occurs on the coast of Fiji at depths of 27 to 43 meters. The species was named in honor of the American ichthyologist William N. Eschmeyer .

Eschmeyer nexus is closely related to the stone fish (Synanceiidae). A characteristic that it shares with the stone fish is a saber-shaped, defensive outgrowth of the lacrimale , the tear- saber . Smith, Everman and Richardson therefore propose that the Eschmeyeridae family be downgraded and assigned to the stonefish as a subfamily.

features

Eschmeyer nexus is only 4.1 cm long. Its dorsal fin is supported by eight spines and 13 soft rays, the anal fin by three spines and eight soft rays. The front spines of the dorsal fin are extremely short. The pectoral fins are without a free-standing fin ray. The membranes of the pelvic fins are attached to the body and fused with the membrane of the opposite fin. The fin rays are unbranched. The number of vertebrae is 25.

The fish are largely without scales. Only along the side line are ten pore-provided scales that are not toothed on the rear edge or have other spines. The sideline extends to the base of the tail fin stalk.

The frontal and parietal bones are severely ossified. Preorbital spines are absent. The gill membranes are under the throat on the isthmus of the gills, not grown together over a wide area. The isthmus is without papillae at the anterior end.
