Escobaria orcuttii is a species of plant in the genus Escobaria from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet orcuttii honors the American Charles Russell Orcutt . An English common name is "Snowball Beehive Cactus".
description
Escobaria orcuttii usually grows singly and only sprouts occasionally. The cylindrical shoots have a diameter of 9 centimeters and can reach heights of up to 15 centimeters. The warts are 4 to 12 millimeters long. The nine to 22 white central spines have a darker tip and lengths of 0.9 to 2.2 centimeters. The 30 to 57 radial spines are also white and up to 2.5 centimeters long.
The more or less pink flowers reach a diameter of 1.2 to 2 centimeters. The slender, ellipsoidal, club-shaped fruits are red. Occasionally some are also green.
Systematics and distribution
Escobaria orcuttii is common in the United States in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico .
The first description by Friedrich Bödeker was published in 1933. Nomenclatory synonyms are Coryphantha strobiliformis var. Orcuttii (Boed.) LDBenson (1969), Coryphantha orcuttii (Boed.) Zimmerman (1972), Escobaria sneedii subsp. orcuttii (Boed.) Lüthy (1999) and Neolloydia orcuttii Rose ex Orcutt (nom. inval. ICBN -Article 32.1c?).
