The Espagne was a Belgian cargo ship , which in the English Channel near St. Catherine's Point, Isle of Wight , Great Britain was sunk when she from Le Havre , France , to Newport, Monmouthshire , UK, was on the way.

construction

The ship was built in Hoboken at the shipyard of Chantiers Navals Anversois. The commissioning was in March 1909. The owner was the shipping company Adolf Deppe from Antwerp . The ship was 71.78 m long , 11 m wide and had a draft of 3.7 m. The measurement was 1,463  GRT . The Espagne had a three-cylinder piston steam engine that drove a propeller .

Downfall

The Espagne was torpedoed by UC 71 on December 25, 1917 at 6:35 a.m. The ship sank to a depth of more than 40 meters (position 50 ° 26 ′  N , 1 ° 29 ′  W, coordinates: 50 ° 26 ′ 0 ″  N , 1 ° 29 ′ 0 ″  W ). Of the 24 people on board, 21 were killed. The other three were saved. The wreck is largely destroyed.
