Landwind X7 (2017-2019)

The Landwind X7 is a compact SUV from the Chinese car manufacturer Jiangling Motors . The vehicle attracted worldwide attention as it is considered a copy of the Range Rover Evoque . Jaguar Land Rover tried to prevent the market launch of the X7, but was unsuccessful.

history

The vehicle was presented in October 2014 and was first shown to the public at the Guangzhou Auto Show in November 2014. Sales in China started on August 6, 2015.

The Landwind X7 attracted worldwide attention due to its visual similarity to the Range Rover Evoque . In contrast to this, the X7 only costs around a third. The X7 was unveiled shortly after a Tata Motors plant , the parent company of Jaguar Land Rover , opened in Changshu . This plant produces the Evoque and Discovery Sport for the Chinese market. Like the X7, the Chinese version of the Evoque was presented at the 2014 Guangzhou Auto Show .

Jaguar Land Rover's initial response came during the 2014 Guangzhou Auto Show, when Jaguar- working designer Ian Callum tweeted images of the X7, pointing out the similarity between the X7 and Evoque. In addition, the company stated that it would investigate whether Jiangling Motors' Evoque design was copied and that it was appropriate to take steps to protect its intellectual property. Jaguar Land Rover later went to court, but the complaints were dismissed in early 2015.

Both Jaguar Land Rover and Jiangling Motors had applied for design patents for the design of the respective models, but both were canceled in 2016. The Evoque's exterior design right was invalidated by China's intellectual property regulator in April 2016, as the car was revealed before the right was filed in November 2011. The cancellation was made at the request of Jiangling Motors. The property right of the X7 was canceled on May 16, 2016 at the request of Jaguar Land Rover, because the design was too similar to that of the Evoque.

In June 2016, Jaguar Land Rover again initiated legal action against Jiangling Motors by taking the company to Beijing court . The Chinese automaker is said to be held responsible for copyright infringement and unfair competition . This is a rare move, as most non-Chinese automakers see no chance of winning a lawsuit over copying exterior design.

In March 2019, Beijing Chaoyang District Court ruled that Jiangling's Landwind X7 was a copy of the Range Rover Evoque. Five unique features of the Land Rover are presented, which Jiangling copied on the Landwind X7. The similarity of the two vehicles is too identical and there has already been widespread confusion among customers. The court ruled that the Landwind should cease selling, manufacturing and marketing immediately. In addition, the Jiangling Motor Corporation has to pay compensation to the British.

In October 2017 Landwind presented a revised version of the X7. It now differs more from the Evoque, especially at the rear.

Technical specifications

The Landwind X7 is offered in three equipment variants. It is powered by a 140 kW (190 PS) two-liter gasoline engine from Mitsubishi , which is also used in the Landwind X5 .
