Østlien, who started for the Raufoss IL , ran his first race in the Continental Cup in Gaasbu in December 2002 . There he finished 53rd in the sprint. In February 2006 he reached his first podium in the Scandinavian Cup with third place in the sprint in Nes . In the following month he completed his first of a total of three World Cup races in Drammen , which he finished in 49th place in the sprint. At his second World Cup appearance in Drammen in March 2007, he got his first and only World Cup points with 23rd place in the sprint. In the 2007/08 season he achieved three top ten finishes, including third place in the sprint in Jõulumäe and second place in the sprint in Riga , seventh place in the overall ranking of the Scandinavian Cup. He also took part in FIS races between 2002 and 2010 . He got his only victory in the sprint in Nes in March 2008.
