Espostoa blossfeldiorum is a species of plant in the genus Espostoa from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German plant breeder and dealer Robert Blossfeld (1882–1945) and his son Harry (1913–1986).

description

Espostoa blossfeldiorum reaches heights of 3 to 4 meters. The shoots measure 5 to 10 centimeters in diameter and are only occasionally branched from the base. There are 18 to 25 ribs with closely spaced areoles on them . The one to four central spines are brown to almost black and up to 3 inches long. The 20 to 25 glassy white radial spines have a length of 5 to 10 millimeters. The cephalium comprises four to eight ribs and consists of dense, yellowish white wool and numerous, strong, glassy bristles with a length of 4 to 5 centimeters.

The slender, funnel-shaped, bad-smelling, creamy yellow flowers are 6 to 7 centimeters long and have a diameter of up to 5 centimeters. The dark green fruits have a length of up to 3 centimeters and a diameter of 2.5 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Espostoa blossfeldiorum is widespread in Peru in the regions of Cajamarca and Amazonas in the valley system of the Río Marañón at altitudes of 500 to 2000 meters.

It was first described as Cephalocereus blossfeldiorum in 1937 by Erich Werdermann . Franz Buxbaum placed the species in the genus Espostoa in 1966 . Nomenclatory synonyms are Thrixanthocereus blossfeldiorum (Werderm.) Backeb. (1937) and Facheiroa blossfeldiorum (Werderm.) WTMarshall (1941).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
