Espostoa calva is a species of plant in the genus Espostoa from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet calva means '(Latin calvus) bald, bald'.

description

Espostoa calva grows tree-shaped and reaches heights of 4 to 9 meters. The upright, green to blue-green shoots , which branch from the base to a height of 2 meters, measure 6 to 9 centimeters in diameter. There are 19 to 23, barely humped ribs , which are 5 to 7 millimeters high and on which there are dark reddish-brown areoles . The twelve to 14 needle-like thorns are golden yellow and 4 to 8 millimeters long. The cephalium comprises six to eight ribs, is 2 to 3 inches long and consists of yellowish white wool.

The creamy white flowers have a diameter of 4 centimeters. The fruits are red.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Espostoa calva is common in Peru in the Amazon region in the valley system of the Río Marañón near Balsas at altitudes of 1800 to 2500 meters.

It was first described in 1981 by Friedrich Ritter .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
