Espostoa ruficeps is a species of plant in the genus Espostoa from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet ruficeps means 'with a fox-red head'.
description
Espostoa ruficeps grows shrubby with shoots branching from the base to half the height and reaches heights of 1.5 to 2.5 meters. The dark green shoots are 7 to 9 centimeters in diameter. There are 16 to 24 ribs that are 5 to 7 millimeters high. The areoles on it are covered with reddish brown felt. The 40 to 60 needle-like thorns are reddish yellow and 7 to 10 millimeters long. The one or two central spines are developed late. They are subpulate and 1 to 4 inches long. The five to eight ribs cephalium is 1 to 2 meters long and consists of reddish, 3 to 4 centimeters long wool.
The white flowers are 5.5 to 6 inches long. The red fruits are 2.5 to 3 centimeters long.
Distribution and systematics
Espostoa ruficeps is common in Peru in the Ancash region at altitudes of up to 2400 meters.
It was first described in 1981 by Friedrich Ritter . A synonym is Espostoa lanata subsp. ruficeps (F.Ritter) GJCharles (2002).
