The Essener Sportverein 1899 (short: ESV 99 ) was the oldest football club in the city of Essen . It was founded in 1899. After a merger with the BTLV Rheinland 06 in 1974, the association is called Essener Sport-Gemeinschaft 99/06 e. V. (short: ESG 99/06 ).
history
The club was founded in 1899 by Walther Bacmeister , among others , who also headed the club as chairman until 1904, making it the oldest soccer club in the city of Essen. Soon he was competing with another middle-class team from Essen, the game division of the Essen Gymnastics Association founded in 1900 . The greatest success in the 1902/03 season was reaching the final round of the first West German championship , in which ultimately only Cologne FC 99 was better, but FC Munich-Gladbach landed behind the Essenes. At the district level, you could even prevail against Duisburger SpV beforehand . Until the 1930s one could establish oneself among the Essen clubs in Essen football.
After that, the club made little talk of itself. After a 1974 merger with the BTLV Rheinland 06 to form the Essener Sport Community 99/06, the club is one of the larger clubs in Essen. The first football team rose to the district league in the 2009/10 season, which is the eighth highest level in German football in the Niederrhein Football Association .
