Scientific name
Turbatrix aceti
( Müller , 1783)

The vinegar gel ( Turbatrix aceti , syn .: Anguillula aceti ) is a free- living , bacteria- eating roundworm (Elchen), which can reach a length of up to 2 mm (male 1 mm).

Occurrence

The vinegar gel occurs preferably in media containing sugar or alcohol, in which acetic acid fermentation takes place, and feeds on the acetic acid bacteria . In the spread of vinegar eels on fermenting fruit, fruit flies play an important role. During the production of vinegar, the vinegar is cleaned of the elderly through filtration and pasteurization .

features

The adult animals, which appear whitish, have a pointed rear end and a rounded front end. After hatching, four larval stages are passed through, of which the third is able to develop a resistant permanent form in poor environmental conditions. It multiplies quickly as numerous generations can grow in the year.

use

Since vinegar eels are easy to breed, they also serve as fresh food for fish larvae in aquariums . Because of their rapid generational succession, they are also used as experimental animals for genetic research.
