Esteban Lazo

Juan Esteban Lazo Hernández (born February 26, 1944 in Jovellanos ) is a Cuban politician of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) , President of Parliament and the Council of State , member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee and the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the PCC.

biography

Because of his poor rural origins, Lazo Hernández was unable to continue his education after primary school, but had to help his parents cultivate the fields and earn a family income from an early age. After the successful revolution of January 1, 1959 , he initially continued to work as a farm worker, but was one of the founders of the Association of Young Rebels (Asociación de Jóvenes Rebeldes) alongside Ernesto Che Guevara in 1960 . In the following period he took part in several functions in the so-called National Campaign for Literacy (Campaña Nacional de Alfabetización de Cuba).

In 1963 he became a member of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) . In 1964 he became secretary of the city committee of the PCC in his native Jovellanos for education and organization, before he became first secretary of the PCC of San Pedro de Mayabón in 1968. In 1969 he became first secretary of the PCC of Colón in his home province of Matanzas . In 1971 he was appointed a member of the provincial office of the PCC of Matanzas and in 1979 at the same time as a delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture for the Matanzas province.

In 1980 he was first second secretary and then in the following year 1981 first secretary of the provincial committee of the PCC of Matanzas. In 1980 he also became a member of the Central Committee of the PCC, and in 1981 a member of the National Assembly (Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular) . A few years later he was first elected First Secretary of the PCC of Santiago de Cuba , the second largest Cuban province. At the 3rd party congress of the PCC in February 1986 he was also elected for the first time a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee, to which he has belonged since then. On February 24, 1992, he was elected Vice President of the State Council (Consejo del Estado de Cuba) . In addition, he became first secretary of the PCC of Havana in 1994 .

When Lazo Hernández became a member of the secretariat of the Central Committee of the PCC in October 1997, the previous First Secretary of the PCC of the Province of Sancti Spíritus Pedro Sáez Montejo was his successor as First Secretary of the PCC of the Province of Havana.

When Fidel Castro fell ill , he became a member of a seven-person committee on July 31, 2006, chaired by Raúl Castro , which took over the leadership of Cuba. On February 24, 2008, he was confirmed by the National Assembly as Vice President of the State Council.

On February 24, 2013, Lazo was elected President of the Cuban National Parliament to succeed Ricardo Alarcón .

Awards

He has received several awards for his services to the Cuban revolution and the state, including:

  • Medal for literacy (Medalla de la Alfabetización),
  • Commemorative medal for the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (Medalla Conmemorativa "XX Aniversario de las FAR"),
  • Certificate for 35 years of management activity in the PCC (Diploma por 35 Años como Cuadro del PCC),
  • Award for 20 years of state security (Distinción XX Años de la Seguridad del Estado).
