Colón is a city and a municipality in the northeast of the Cuban province of Matanzas .

geography

The municipality is located north of Calimete and southeast of Perico and has an area of ​​597 km². Colón is divided into seven districts ( Barrio ): Agüica, Este, Guareiras, Jacán, Laguna Grande, Oeste and Palmillas. The area is mainly agricultural, sugar cane, tobacco and oranges are grown.

As of 2012, the municipality has 72,000 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 120.6 inhabitants per square kilometer.

history

The settlement was officially established in 1846.

On August 4, 1989, a serious railway accident occurred near Colón when two passenger trains collided head-on at high speed. The two leading locomotives and four passenger cars were destroyed. 32 people died and 17 were also injured.
