Jovellanos is a city and a municipality in the province of Matanzas in Cuba , divided into the barrios Asunción, Isabel, Realengo and San José.
In 1842 the settlement was founded as Corral de la Bemba . It was given its current name in 1870 in honor of the statesman and writer Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos . In the same year it was upgraded to a villa .
