Salvador Jovellanos

Salvador Silvestre del Rosario Jovellanos Guanes (born December 31, 1833 in Asunción , † February 11, 1881 in Buenos Aires ) was a Paraguayan politician who was President of Paraguay between 1871 and 1874 .

Life

Jovellanos spent his youth in Argentina and later took part in the Triple Alliance War between 1864 and 1870 , a struggle of Paraguay against the allied states Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay that ended in the total defeat of Paraguay and as the bloodiest conflict in Latin American history applies. Paraguay lost most of its population as a result of the war (around 384,000 of around 500,000 inhabitants). In addition, the victors annexed around 50 percent of Paraguayan territory and kept the country occupied until 1876. Paraguay lost its economic efficiency and its prosperity.

In the post-war period, Jovellanos played a key role in the reconstruction of the country and was initially finance minister (Ministro de Hacienda) before becoming vice-president on January 7, 1871. After the resignation of Cirilo Antonio Rivarola , he finally took over the office of President of Paraguay on December 18, 1871 . During his presidency he tried to stimulate the strengthening of the economy, but finally had to resign under pressure from the Brazilian Empire on November 25, 1874, whereupon Juan Bautista Gill succeeded him.
