Cirilo Antonio Rivarola

Cirilo Antonio Rivarola Acosta (* 1836 in Barrero Grande , † December 31, 1879 in Asunción ) was a Paraguayan politician who was president of a provisional government triumvirate between 1869 and 1870 and president of Paraguay from 1870 to 1871 .

Life

Rivarola became president of a provisional government triumvirate (Triunviro del Paraguay) on August 15, 1869 , which also included Carlos Loizaga and José Díaz de Bedoya , and thus successor to President Francisco Solano López , who, however, in fact continued until his death on March 1, 1870 ruled. On August 31, 1870, this triumvirate was replaced by Facundo Machaín , who was replaced on September 1, 1870 by Rivarola, who now ruled provisionally until November 25, 1870 and then took office as the fourth President of Paraguay . He held this office until his resignation on December 18, 1871 and was then replaced by the previous Vice President Salvador Jovellanos .

In October 1877 Rivarola undertook a coup d'état against President Higinio Uriarte , which the latter was able to suppress. Uriarte's successor, Cándido Bareiro, guaranteed him the return to Asunción, where he was stabbed to death by unknown masked men on December 31, 1879 after a meeting with President Bareiro on the instructions of War Minister Bernardino Caballero .
